Dr. Thomas Joseph

Dr. Thomas Joseph was born in Ootacamund Tamilnadu in 1948.

He did his schooling in Breeks Memorial School Ooty.

He completed undergraduate medical training from Trivandrum Medical College in 1971.

He completed M.S. in Neurosurgery in 1981 from Christian Medical College Vellore and continued in the department of Neurological Sciences where he spent 18 years. During this period he went to U.K. for a 3 year study leave.

He became Professor of Neurosurgery, Christian Medical College Vellore and Head of the Unit in 1990.

He pioneered Intra-operative monitoring in Neurosurgery in Vellore and has original research papers to his credit.

His special interest has been in Brain Tumour surgery, Cervical /Lumbar disc surgery and Epilepsy surgery.

He was examiner in Neurosurgery in many Universities in the Country and for the National Board.

He has many National and International publications and authored chapters in Neurosurgical Textbooks.

He has presented many original pioneering papers at National and International Conferences

He relocated to Coimbatore in 1993 and was instrumental in developing Neurosurgery in various Corporate Hospitals in the city and in the training of young Neurosurgeons.

He established a Neurosurgical Centre in Burdwan West Bengal in a rural hospital and was instrumental in saving the lives of thousands of patients with head injuries and other Neurosurgical problems in that remote area of our Country where Neurosurgical care was unavailable.

His passion to contribute to the welfare of the marginalized prompted him to take up the challenge of rehabilitating patients who have had spinal cord injury. Thus the Charitable Trust SAHAI was born in Coimbatore in 1998. With the untiring efforts of his co workers he has been able to bring hope and joy to over 380 paraplegics who are now walking and are independent. The SAHAI Spinal Rehabilitation Centre in Kovilpalayam Coimbatore is a model which he hopes to replicate in other parts of our Country.

In recognition of his contribution to society he was awarded the Dr. Abdul Gafoor Memorial Award in 2006 by the Kerala Social Welfare Foundation which was presented to him by Mr. E. Ahmed the Honourable Minister of State for External Affairs. He was also awarded the Vijay Shree award by the India International Friendship Society.

He is now Honorary Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon at Kovai Medical Centre & Hospital Coimbatore, Consultant Neurosurgeon in Medwin Hospital Trichy Road Coimbatore and Managing Trustee of SAHAI Trust.

The alarming increase in the cost of Neurosurgical care in Coimbatore has been a source of worry and hopes that a facility can be created in the City where high quality Neurosurgical care can be given at the least possible cost to benefit the not so affluent community.
